The challenge

Cruise companies appreciate that the cruise experience starts well before they board the ship. The holiday experience starts with the travel arrangements and ensuring the customer is able to easily access the port whether by public transport or by car.

However, not all transport terminals in city centres have parking available onsite mainly due to the lack of available land with many transport terminal operators not having the desire to maintain and operate their own parking facilities. Liverpool Cruise Terminal is unique for the UK in that it is based on the heart of Liverpool City Centre with no customer parking facilities. They therefore had to source parking from a Third-Party Operator who they can trust to deliver that parking excellence.

Q-Park’s solution

Q-Park teamed up with Liverpool Cruise Terminal to provide an integrated mobility solution to help aid passengers securely park their vehicle whilst they are away on holiday.

When customers book their cruise, they are also able to book their parking at Q-Park through the cruise operator, they simply enter their number plate and make payment in the booking flow. Upon arrival the customers Number Plates are read by the camera and the barrier opens automatically. They are then directed via clear signage to park in the cruise parking area. Once parked, the Cruise Terminal team greet the customers with luggage vans and passenger minibuses to take them directly from inside the car park to the Terminal to check in. On return customers are transported back to their vehicle where they exit the parking facility via their Number Plate to allow them to seamlessly start their journey home.

Outcome

The scheme has proved popular with both the Cruise Terminal Operator and their customers. They now have a parking partner close by who they can rely on to securely host their passengers vehicles and that is agile enough to create a bespoke system that worked for their requirements. Using the innovative PaSS technology allows Q-Park to replicate this scheme to customers in other Q-Park countries including the UK & Ireland.
